Dear Parent or Guardian

Expansion

I’m guessing you will have seen that our expansion building work has started in earnest. Whilst it is likely to take just over a year to complete, the difference for Borden will be immense. A good sized sports hall, changing rooms fit for purpose, a reasonable amount of toilets, storage so that we can remove the numerous storage containers we rent, a 6th form area that can hold the growing numbers who choose to stay as well as additional classrooms….I could go on. As the build progresses, Kier has offered to run various sessions for our students and there is certainly much to be gained from a better understanding of the opportunities in the construction industry, either through apprenticeship or by pursuing an engineering degree. More historically, whilst preparing the foundations, the digging uncovered the former bunker that was built for the school during World War II. For those that are interested in the school history, we have added some of these pictures to the school website with some clippings from the time. Click here

Bunkers

Talk of bunkers segways nicely into my next point. The idea of a bunker was for everyone to hide under ground until the danger had passed overhead, at which point you could emerge unscathed. I’m sure that many would like a bunker to hide in at the moment with international unrest, the cost of living crisis, strikes and a continuing reduction in support services. It is entirely understandable that parents and educators will hold different views on the wave of strikes that are taking place across the country. To reassure you, we will do what we can to keep the school running for as many students as we can, prioritising the vulnerable, essential workers and final year examination groups. We will continue to try and make these decisions as soon as possible to give you time to put measures into place. However, as an interested party, you should be aware that schools nationally, including Borden, are doing their best to deal with a significant increase in safeguarding and welfare issues, accompanied by a chronic shortage of staff. National recruitment targets for teachers in most subject areas have been missed for 9 years and it’s quite usual to get less than a handful, or sometimes even no replies to job adverts, with schools competing for the same small pool of staff. Putting views on the current dispute aside, I would ask that you write to your MP to point out that everyone suffers if there aren't enough quality teachers from which to recruit.

Reminders for students and parents

Please can I remind you that the school day starts at 8.40am for students and if you are dropping your child off, please do it safely and avoid parking directly outside or dropping near the roundabout in Albany road where we have had a number of complaints. Better still, encourage your child to cycle or walk if at all possible, particularly as it gets warmer. We have also recently reminded students of the basics; that they need to go to the toilet in their break times and not lessons, to only have their mobiles in social spaces at social times and that reckless behaviour often results in someone getting hurt - it does not mean it’s an accident. Finally, littering has increased with the resident seagulls becoming a menace around the school…we will be increasing our use of community service with litter pickers to address this next term!

Pride of Borden

As we wind up to the examination season, Borden has continued to keep the community buzzing. This has included numerous sports fixtures, a variety of clubs after school and there have been a number of science and primary visits this half term. This week saw our school concert showcasing an array of drama and music with over 35 students involved from all key stages. The return of the ski trip to Italy takes place over this half term and the French trip to Montpellier also returns this year. This is all aside from the mentoring, mental health ambassadors, free breakfast club, anti bullying ambassadors, school council and numerous other student support activities that take place on a weekly basis. There is much to be proud and positive about at Borden despite the temptation to hide in our World War II bunker!

Kind regards

Some words from our Heads of Years

Once again the year group continues to work hard and impress the teachers of Borden. Within the Maths department we have launched a new online platform called Sparx Maths for homework completion. Every week Mr Swaffer crunches the numbers to find the form with the highest completion percentage and so far a Year 7 form has won every time! That is a huge achievement which shows that they are getting into good routines as they continue on their secondary school transition. During form time this term we have focused on Online Safety, and discussed important topics such as: Online Hate, Freedom of Speech vs Hate Speech, Protected Characteristics and most importantly how to challenge unkind behaviour. Form tutors have been so proud of the mature stance the year group have taken when having these discussions. I would like to give a big shout out to our Term 3 Form Competition winners 7TH! Your hard work and efforts have been recognised, please enjoy your sweet treats and non-uniform day!
Have a lovely half term break Year 7, we're at the halfway point now!

Miss Irinoye  Head of Year 7

The focus for Year 9 this term has been getting ready to make their Options Choices.  It was wonderful to welcome so many parents/carers and students to the Options Evening on 25th January and the Year 9 Parents Evening on 2nd February.  Thank you for the conversations that have been had with Year 9 students regarding the best subject choices for GCSE.  As you are aware, Option choices are confirmed towards the end of the school year and so students should continue to work hard across the curriculum for the remainder of Year 9.  Well done to the students for the mature and thoughtful way in which they have handled the Options process.

Mrs Edwards  Head of Year 9

This term, Year 11 have continued to build on their independent study skills in preparation for their upcoming final mock exams. Pupils have explored a variety of techniques including blurting (using different colours to identify gaps in knowledge) and RAG rating (reviewing exam specifications to prioritise the topics that require detailed revision). The school also held a parental support evening where the key messages being delivered to Year 11 pupils were given to parents, increasing the link between school and home, ensuring pupils are supported as well as can be for the challenges to come. Overall, I have been delighted with the effort and application of Year 11 pupils and have been overwhelmed by their high levels of motivation and dedication to their studies.

Work begins to expand school

There has been a lot of activity over the past few weeks, and it is becoming very evident that the expansion is well underway! The haul road has been constructed, and the piling rig is now in place. We will keep you updated with the progress of the new build which is currently scheduled to be completed in March 2024. Keep an eye out on our website where we will be recording the progress. Exciting times at Borden!

Religious Studies Department

Year 7 have been exploring the ‘Ministry of Jesus’ and seeing how Jesus served those around him. They have investigated his miracles, the different techniques he used to communicate his teachings and how he related to his family. In Year 8 have been investigating the formation and role of the Khalsa in the Sikh community. In addition, they have looked at the largest langar in the world and how it demonstrates the concept of sewa. Year 9 have been learning about Islam and the Five Pillars; Shahadah, Salat, Zakat, Sawm and Hajj.  Next term we will look at, amongst other things, Islamic Art and the differences between Sunni and Shia beliefs.

GCSE Religious Studies - Year 10 are now over halfway through the first part of the course!  They have been sitting timed assessments for Islam, and will no doubt be preparing hard for their Christianity assessment after the break. Year 11 have been diving into ‘Relationships and Family Life’ and there have been lots of contemporary news examples for them to draw upon, and of course when they arrive back they will be straight into their second set of mocks.  We wish them well and the RS Department wishes all the students and their families a restful break.

This term, Years 7-10 have had a fantastic opportunity to develop their rugby skills and performances within core PE lessons. Staff have been able to set differentiated tasks to support pupils of all confidence/skill levels going forward in their willingness to express themselves within rugby. After half term there are regular rugby fixtures lined up against local schools, including tournaments at QE school and Sittingbourne Rugby Club. Our extra curricular teams have fared well in football and hockey this term. Year 9 and 11 reached the semi finals of the Kent Cup football competitions before being beaten by Herne Bay High and Simon Langton respectively, an outstanding achievement. Years 7-10 also experienced hockey games against Harvey Grammar and Gravesend Grammar school, demonstrating increasingly confident performances and the influence of Sittingbourne Hockey Club coach Kate at hockey club on Tuesday afternoons. Next term, clubs continue as advertised for term 3: Y7-10 rugby clubs on Mondays after school, Y7-9 hockey club on Tuesdays after school and Y7/8 table tennis club on Wednesdays after school.

Secondhand uniform shop

Can you help us and the environment by supporting our second-time-around
uniform shop?

We are keen to take our recycling further and start a second-time-around
uniform shop. This will enable parents and carers to donate items of Borden
uniform to the shop but more importantly to help the environment by buying
from the shop for a small donation.

Our second-time-around uniform shop gives families the opportunity to spend
their hard earned money on the essentials rather than on an expensive new
uniform.

Donations can include: blazers, trousers, shirts, ties, jumpers, shoes, PE kit
and winter coats.

We please ask that all uniform items are washed before donating. Thank you.
